Demo Alert: Vulvalard

Here comes the latest entry in the annals of Oakland’s heavy punk/crust scene, courtesy of a couple people who helped define what that sound meant to a bunch of us during the mid to late ‘90s. One half of Vulvalard did time in some of the East Bay’s best bands throughout the 1990s—Econochrist, Ojorojo, and Eldopa. The other half formed one of the most underrated local bands of the early 2000s in the Scurvy Dogs. Although they have only played a few shows so far (that I have not attended because I suck sometimes), this demo is proof that Vulvalard already has what it takes to fly the Oakland crustcore flag with pride. Lots of you who are attempting to write new chapters in this book should sit down and pay attention. Personally, my main complaint about bands in general these days is the lack of variety in what they play. I wish the punk bands would slow down occasionally and feel the power. The heavy bands could stand to speed up now and then to let me know that they still have blood pumping through their veins. Vulvalard answers the call by doing both, which is much appreciated. I hope that they stick around to give the mediocre crap offending my ears at shows the swift kick in the ass that it deserves. Get baked and pretend it’s 1995 all over again.

Thanks for introducing me to Vulvalard. I would have never encountered this great band.
